Discraft Hades | Understable Distance Driver

Paul McBeth's line has been full of pleasant surprises, but mostly for intermediate and advanced players. It's not surprising considering Paul McBeth is about as pro as they get!

The Discraft Hades is the welcomed exception in the line. Its understable flight and high glide increase its appeal to players with a less developed form or a lower arm speed.

If you're growing into disc golf the correct way, and slowly increasing disc speed as your form progresses the Discraft Hades is a great choice. Consider it your step up from that beloved 9-10 speed driver!

Discraft Hades Review

The Hades was designed and built with a simple goal in mind: easy distance! If that's what you're looking for you're in the right place!

There are two things that help the Hades achieve this goal. The first is understability. It allows beginner-intermediate players the opportunity to use a distance driver, while still maintaining good form!

The Hades has a beautiful turning flight, with a decent fade back at the end. When you start to master this shot shape we're talking big distance!

Secondly, you have the immense glide! The Discraft Hades will seemingly hang in the air while travelling forward at distance driver speed!

Backhands

The Hades could well be your upcoming backhand bomber! It has the potential to fly well over 400 feet, the rest is up to you! If you haven't been using understable distance drivers the Hades is your disc. It's your voucher to an extra 30+ feet of distance with no effort!

Advanced players will likely find the Hades useful for its versatility! Need a massive turnover? Or maybe a really chunky hyzer flip? Try out a Discraft Hades. You can even use it for rollers after the odd tree kick!

Forehands

Believe it or not, the Discraft Hades is almost as popular for sidearms as it is for backhand! While we don't believe it's a great choice for powerful sidearms, beginners, and intermediates may find it to be a secret weapon!

Its understability, glide, and speed make this a bomber for sidearms! You can hyzer flip it or throw it flat, depending on your power, and have it turn for days before fading back!

The only downside is that it won't be super dependable, especially in the wind. This is because overstable discs better handle forehand torque, whereas understable drivers are a little more touchy.

Feel

The Discraft Hades is super comfortable for a driver! The rim is much more manageable than something like a Boss, or a Nuke. Its gentle even dome feels great and generates the high glide. It's also surprising to find a driver that feels great in the hand for backhands and forehands!

Discraft Hades Flight Numbers

Flight Numbers

Speed: 12

Glide: 6

Turn: -3

Fade: 2

If you're a beginner with less power you may find the Hades to be less understable than the numbers suggest. This is because you aren't getting the disc up to speed. Always make sure you've mastered slower-speed discs before moving up!

Plastics

ESP: Durable and grippy ESP is one of the most popular plastics for the Hades. It's pretty accurate to flight numbers, and seasons in gently to more understable flights.

CyZtal: The Hades have become seriously popular due to their increased overstability. Just as durable as ESP, but a little less grippy. If you have decent power a CryZtal Hades will have an easier time handling it!

Big Z: Very similar flight characteristics to the ESP Hades. The difference is a slightly gummier feel, and a touch more durability.

History

The Discraft Hades was PDGA approved quite recently, March 2020 to be precise. It was the 5th disc to be released in Discraft's Paul McBeth line. Today that line comprises 6 molds, the most recent being the Athena.

The Hades was released at the peak of Discraft's Covid popularity, and sold out about as fast as retailers could get them! They're still popular thanks to their beginner-friendly, and far-flying characteristics.

Here is what Discraft has to say about the Hades:

The Hades is the perfect, understable complement and archnemesis to the Zeus. With lots of glide and a more controllable fade, this is a distance driver suited to most players looking to go big. The Hades allows for extreme distance with less effort than a more stable distance driver and feels comfortable in the hand.

Skill Level Recommendations

Beginners - Throw a Hades as your first step into the distance driver world! It's easy to get a full flight with it thanks to superior glide and significant understability.

Intermediate - PWhen you're looking down an open fairway and wanting one thing, distance, reach for the Hades. Spend a little time fine-tuning your hyzer angle to adjust for your level of power. You'll be throwing massive S-shaped shots in no time!

Advanced - A great option for big turnovers that won't pull out early. Use it to complement your more overstable main driver. Once it has taken a little damage, you could even use it as a roller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hades good in the wind?

The Hades makes a great tailwind driver! When throwing into headwinds you'll have to be careful, the understability won't hold up to significant gusts. Consider throwing a more overstable driver into headwinds.

Is the Hades good for backhand?

The Hades is an excellent backhand crusher for beginners and intermediates. It's understability and high glide make for hyzer flipped shots that cruise down the fairway for miles! Advanced players can utilize it when a big backhand turnover is required.

Is the Hades good for forehand?

The Discraft Hades makes a great understable forehand driver! You'll get a long drifting turn, before a solid fade back. This is the ideal way to cover serious ground when you don't have power. Just beware of strong winds!
