Discraft Raptor - Overstable Driver

Sometimes there are discs that come along that immediately become fixtures in the game of disc golf. The Discraft Raptor is one of those discs. A 9-speed, overstable driver with countless runs in Discraft’s ever-evolving line of plastics, the Raptor is for everyone!

First released in 2018, the Discraft Raptor was instantly put in the bag like Paul Ulibarri, Paul McBeth, and many others. In fact, it’s so popular, that multiple pros have signature Raptor runs, like Paige Pierce, Aaron Gossage, Adam Hammes, and of course, Paul Ulibarri.

Here’s what Discraft has to say about the Raptor:

The…Raptor driver has been a collaboration between our Team Discraft captain, Paul Ulibarri and our R&D guys. Driving into wind - check. Flex shots, Sidearm - check, check. The Raptor delivers the most confidence you've ever felt in a driver under 300ft. Make room in your bag, this just became a staple.

They were right about the Raptor becoming a staple in everyone’s bag.

Discraft Raptor Flight Numbers

Speed: 9

Glide: 4

Turn: 0

Fade: 3

Discraft Stability Rating: 2.1

While there are some stability differences when it comes to the Raptor’s plastic and run, it is mostly a super consistent disc that is reliable and fun to throw.

On Hyzer, the Raptor will push forward and cover a decent amount of distance with the 4 glide before crashing faithfully to the ground. Players will find that long, swooping hyzer lines are not only possible but easy to throw with the Raptor.

Thrown flat, the Raptor is able to hit a number of golf lines and is quite useful on nearly every type of course. Players who throw mostly open, park courses will love big lines and the Raptor's reliability in the wind. Thrown in the woods, the Raptor can be manipulated around trees and through thin lines.

Plastics for the Raptor

The Discraft Raptor comes in a variety of plastics - take a look below to read our description of a handful of these runs and find the perfect Raptor for your bag!

Z: The Z Raptor was the initial Discraft Raptor run is still remains as one of the most popular runs on the market today. Z is consistently flat and stiff with great feel. It’s neither slick or overly gummy. We found the Z Raptor to be one of the most overstable and durable runs.

ESP: The Discraft ESP Raptor is one of the most versatile Raptors and offers a touch less stability than its Z counterparts. Out of the box, the ESP Raptor is overstable but with enough time on the course it can be broken into a hyzer flip straight to stable driver.

Jawbreaker Z FLX: The 2024 Tour Series edition of the Raptor was a huge success and filled a slot in the Raptor line-up! The Jawbreaker Z FLX plastic is soft and gummy without losing too much stiffness. While it’s more overstable than ESP, the Jawbreaker Z FLX is a tick straighter than the standard Z models and is therefore easier to control for lower arm speeds.

Titanium Raptor: The Titanium Raptor is one of the most fun runs of Raptor to own. Much like the Ti Nukes, this Raptor starts out with a decent amount of stability but “breaks in” with use and straightens out, much like an ESP run. Players who enjoy the feel and look of Ti plastic will love this Raptor.

Discraft Raptor Skill level recommendations

Beginner: The Raptor is for everybody. We don’t recommend beginner players to rely on the Discraft Raptor for distance drivers but the disc does have its uses. Lower arm speed players can use the Raptor for short overstable approaches and drivers or when there’s a fairly stiff headwind and their Undertaker or Passion may burn over.

Intermediate: Intermediate players will love the Raptor. It’s a highly workable disc for most arm speeds and as players progress, the overstable 9 speed is a crucial slot for their bag.

Advanced: Ezra Aderhold, Paul McBeth, Paul Ulibarri, Brodie Smith, Adam Hammes, Missy Gannon, Paige Pierce… Should we go on? There’s a reason advanced and pro players love the Discraft Raptor. It’s incredibly reliable and one of the most workable discs in the Discraft line-up. Advanced players will lean on this disc to hit hyzer lines, throw flex shots, and defeat windy conditions.
