Discmania PD | Overstable Control Driver

The Discmania PD is one of the most popular overstable drivers in disc golf! It's been one of Discmania's best sellers since its creation in 2008.

When Discmania and Innova split in 2021, the latter retained control of the molds. For this reason, Discmania had to create a new mold with some slight differences. This review is for the new Discmania PD.

Discmania PD Review

The PD is the epitome of control and accuracy when it comes to 10-speed drivers! Not many other discs can lay claim to its level of consistency. This is why it's been a staple in 100s of disc golf bags for the last 15 odd years!

The PD offers something special in its perfect blend of overstability and distance! It doesn't fall out of the sky mid-flight like a Firebird, but you can still trust it in a stiff headwind!

If you're looking for something with a straight flight and a strong fade at the end a slightly beaten-in PD is perfect! New it's a little stabler and perfect as a headwind driver.

Backhands

With its low glide and overstability, the Discmania PD might sound more like a forehand disc to you. It's actually about as popular backhand as it is for sidearm! It has the ability to take all your power and fly straight for a good distance before finishing with a strong fade!

You can put it on a little anny for a flex line, and some extra distance. Some players also season them until they have a small flip, yet retain the dependable finish.

Forehands

The PD is one of the forehand greats in disc golf! PD is short for power driver, and that's a perfectly accurate description of this mold! It can handle the torque produced by powerful sidearms but still has the flight characteristics to fly long distances. You might consider it a slower and more controllable Destroyer!

When you need to throw a forehand flex line the PD will be there for you, even for shorter distances! Need to hang it out over OB? You can trust the Discmania PD to come back every time!

Feel

The PD has an aggressive feel in the hand invigorating you to attack the course! The 10-speed means it fits into smaller hands with ease! Its overall feel is much like the Thunderbird, with a blunted nose and a shallow rim.

Dominess can vary from run to run. Flatter runs should be less stable, while pop top molds will be more overstable.

Just the feel of this instills confidence when you're standing on the tee pad!

Plastics

S-Line: Grippy and durable this is comparable to Innova Star and Dynamic Discs Fuzion. S-Line PDs are commonly less stable and a tad less durable than C-Line. A great choice when you want to bag multiple molds and wear them in to different stages!

C-Line: Super durable with bright translucent coloring. C-Line PDs are generally a touch more stable than S. The plastic comes from Italy.

History

The Discmania PD has quite an interesting history! The original Innova-made mold was PDGA approved in July 2008. It was extremely popular, but then in June 2021 Discmania and Innova ended their partnership. Innova retained rights over the mold so Discmania had to create a new one.

Just a few months later in November 2021, Discmania got their new PD mold PDGA approved. Innova continued producing the old PD mold under the new name of Phantom Sword, or Champion Power Disc.

Manufacturer - Discmania

Discmania began as an online disc golf store and then introduced its own molds. These were manufactured by Innova Discs, a long-established disc golf brand. During plastic shortages in Covid Discmania split away and started their own plant. This was because Innova couldn't produce enough discs to meet Discmania's customer demand.

Discmania is perhaps most well known for at one time sponsoring Simon Lizotte and Eagle McMahon, aka the Crush Boys.

Here is what Discmania has to say about the PD:

The PD is a power driver, designed to offer control and a reliable flight path in all conditions. It’s possibly the best all-around driver for more advanced players. Newer players will also find use for the PD as a trusty overstable disc for headwind throws and flex shots.
