If you're doing your research before making the purchase read on! We have a ton of info on the Sol that we want to share with you!

Discraft Sol Review

The Sol is just different. You could almost describe it as a midrange putter crossover. It was introduced in 2018, at Discraft's Ace Race that year. It's definitely not one of Discraft's most popular or well-known discs, but in our opinion, it's seriously underrated!

The Sol is a real game-changer in the woods! Its understability and slow controllable speed help you hit tight wooded lines!

It's very easy to throw this disc dead straight with a hyzer flip, or gently flip it over all the way to the ground, without fade, but also without it turning and burning!

Backhands

The Sol is a backhand wonder! From the feel to the flight, everything is just slightly unique in a refreshing way!

It's a great disc for hitting tight lines. You can easily send it straight down a tunnel, or drift it to the right to resemble a sidearm line. (Switch that around if you're a lefty.)

Advanced and intermediate players can get the Sol flying laser straight by releasing it on a significant hyzer. You'll have to finetune it to your own power level with a little fieldwork. For shots that turn over with no fade back release the Sol flat.

The amazing thing is how the Sol won't just turn and burn, maybe it's due to the high glide!

Beginner players will find the Discraft Sol one of the easiest discs to throw straight. If you've been struggling with all your shots fading out early try one of these. The best thing, as your power increases the Sol will not become redundant. In fact, it'll be more versatile and useful to you!

Forehands

To put it simply, we don't recommend the Sol for forehands. It's just not where its strong points lie! If you're a player who has a really good touchy sidearm putter flick, you might find this handy. You could use it for tight turnovers, much like you'd get with a putter, but just a little further.

Note - If you can't throw forehands you can throw backhand turnovers with the Sol that are a very close replacement!

Feel

In our opinion, the feel of the Sol in the hand is truly the decider! The rim is just so small, rounded, and downright comfy! If you're a fan of using fan grips for slower-speed discs it's even better!

It's hard to describe but the Sol feels small in the hand. This gives a nice compact feel in the hand that generates confidence when playing on tight crowded wooded courses!

The flight plate has a gentle dome, which is why the Sol possesses such great glide!

It has a very shallow rim, which in our opinion only adds to the comfort. The Sol is very easy to release on the right line for this reason.

Out of the box, the Sol can be a tad more stable, more like a -2. Once it's beaten in a little it very closely resembles the original flight numbers.

Plastics

Z: Durable and stable. Elite Z Sols are one of the most popular plastic variations. It's great that they'll last many a round before becoming too understable!

ESP: A similar durability to Z, just with added grip!

Big Z: Very durable, with a gummier feel when compared to Z. Another great option for the Sol

Pro D: Discraft's baseline plastic. We don't recommend this plastic for the Sol as it will beat in fast. Once the Sol is beaten in considerably it can be too understable.

History

The Sol was PDGA approved in 2018, November. It was featured at the Discraft Ace Race event. A bunch of players then found it to be too understable for their liking. This seems to have dried up. Perhaps Discraft tweaked their mold a little!

Manufacturer - Discraft

Discraft have been making discs long before the Sol was even thought of! They are one of the largest disc golf manufacturers to this day. The Comet, Meteor, and Fierce can all be compared to the Sol, but none have quite the same feel and flight.

Skill Level Recommendations

Beginners - The Sol is an excellent beginner disc. This will be one of the easiest discs to throw straight, even with less power.

Intermediate - Please do yourself a favor and try out the Sol. Chances are you don't know what you're missing out on because you've never had anything like it! It's a wooded wonder that can effortlessly hit straight and turnover lines.

Advanced - If you like to use your power then the Sol may just be a little too understable for you. If you're a fan of dialing it down in the woods and bringing out the finesse then the Sol is a great choice for the same reasons as it is for intermediates!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Sol good in the wind?

The Sol is not a great disc to pull out of the bag when the gusts get going! Its understability makes it unreliable in a strong headwind. The Sol is most used in the woods, which is also where there is less wind!

Is the Sol good for backhand?

The Sol is a really sweet disc for backhand shots! You can achieve a ton of different lines with it, including tunnel shots, and forehand-like turnovers!

Is the Sol good for forehand?

The Sol is not well suited to forehand shots. The main cause of this is the understability. When a disc is more understable it has a harder time managing the extra torque a sidearm naturally produces!
