Innova Katana | Understable Distance Driver

The Katana is one of those discs that tend to just get lost in Innova's massive lineup. What disc golfers don't know is that it's one of the best high speed drivers out there for crazily big distance!

If you're just looking to buy, we have the Innova Katana for sale above in various plastics and special editions.

If you're looking for info on the Katana read on! Here at DGD, we have first-hand experience with the Innova Katana that we're ready to share with you!

Innova katana Review

The Katana is a wide-rimmed distance-munching monster! It's very low profile, and cuts like a sword through the air! Distances of 500 feet plus are highly achievable when you have decent form and considerable power! Let us tell you why.

The Innova Katana has a unique characteristic. It's very understable, but it's also overstable. At the beginning of the flight, you can hyzer flip it into the sky and get a huge turn to the point where you think it's never coming back! Then the 3 fade kicks in and you get a solid late forward-pushing fade bag.

On top of its amazing flight path that maximizes distance, it also has a sweet amount of glide. Not enough to slow it down, but enough to keep it in the air for days!

Backhands

The Innova Katana is what you pull out of the bag when you've got plenty of space, and a lot of distance to cover. Players with the power will find it to be a hyzer flip machine, with the glide and fade to create massive S-shaped shots!

The nice thing about the Katana is that it's noticeably more overstable in Champion. This means if you find it too understable in another plastic you can easily adjust. You can even bag multiple plastics to adjust your game to the wind, or when you want a tad more control!

Warning: Power + Form + Innova Katana = Big Distance!

It's simple math! ;)

Forehands

The Innova Katana isn't only a bomber on the backhand! If you've got a powerful forehand try hyzer flipping one of these bad boys! The distance potential is huge! Although it is understable, the wide rim helps it to handle sidearm torque.

The low profile and the flat underside of the rim make it a great fit in a forehand grip as well!

Feel

The Innova Katana was named after a Samarui's weapon of choice for nothing! The low profile and sharp edge allow the driver to slice through the air!

The rim is very wide being a 13-speed, so if you have smaller hands you might have a hard time getting them around the Katana.

The flight plate has a gentle and even dome, producing the perfect amount of glide, and a great feel!

Innova Katana Flight Numbers

Flight Numbers

Speed: 13

Glide: 5

Turn: Champion -2 Other -3

Fade: 3

Note that the Katana is rated with one less turn for Champion plastic. This is accurate.

Katana may feel a little more overstable when it's brand new. Once it's seasoned a little it'll be perfect. After a while though you may find yours becomes a little too understable. Time to pull out a new sword!

Plastics

Champion: The most durable and also more overstable in flight. Champion Katanas actually have 1 less turn than other plastic Katanas.

Star: Nearly as durable as Champion, but with better grip. The personal fave here at DGD!

Gstar: Gummy, flexible, and grippy. Gstar Katanas will probably be slightly flatter on top, and hence, slightly more understable.

DX: We don't recommend DX Katanas. Distance drivers have to be able to take a beating, and DX just isn't up to the task!

History

The Innova Katana was PDGA approved in 2009, October. It's almost faded off the scene with the massive amount of high speed drivers released since then. If you haven't already tried it out we highly recommend you do today! It leaves nothing to be desired when you're looking for neat distance!

Here is what Innova has to say about the Katana:

The Katana is built with the finesse thrower in mind. Recommended downwind driver. Hit the angle right and watch it bolt out of sight. The physical characteristics resemble a Boss with the flight characteristics of a Sidewinder on steroids. Master the technique of Katana and rule the course. Champion Katanas have slightly different flight characteristics at [13|5|-2|3].

Gregg Hosfeld has a word on the Katana!

Possibly my favorite out-of-the-box high-speed driver. It takes a while to turn over and glides really well. Recently, this 52 year old 3'd a 780' hole from 45' behind the pin with 2 Pro Katana drives. I'd say the disc works pretty well.

Hear Holly Finley say it:

The Blizzard Katana is my go-to distance driver when there is little to no wind. As a new player, the Katana helped me achieve maximum distance. Try one out in light weights between 135g-150g if you want to add some distance to your drives. It is also a great disc for new female players!

Skill Level Recommendations

Beginners - If you're new to the sport we recommend you hold off the Katana for a little while. We suggest waiting until you can comfortably throw 350ish with slower discs. If you're too excited to wait get a Blizzard Champion Katana, they're easier to get up to speed!

Intermediate - We highly recommend trying out a Katana. full stop.

Advanced - Most advanced players would rather bag a more overstable distance driver for the added control, and we agree with this. But when there's an open field, and you just want to crush it you'll regret leaving the Katana behind!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Katana good in the wind?

The Innova Katana makes a great downwind driver! If you're throwing into a headwind you may want to switch to something with a little more stability. The low profile design does help it to cut through the wind to a certain extent.

Is the Katana good for backhand?

The Katana is a backhand bomber! When you have space you can throw massive shots with a huge high speed turn and a forward-pushing fade back.

Is the Katana good for forehand?

The Katana is also a great distance driver for forehands when you want to throw far! Compensate for the understability with a decent hyzer and you're good to go!
