Axiom Tempo Overstable Approach Disc

The Axiom Tempo is an overstable approach disc. It was released at the 2023 MVP Circuit Challenge and took Gyro fans by storm! Demand was high but supply was low until the 2024 OTB Open release featured the Tempo in the mind-blowing Proton Soft plastic!

Stick around because there's about to be another drop of this popular approach disc! To celebrate the MVP Open the Tempo will be released in Eclipse 2.0! You can preorder them now!

So why has the Tempo been so popular? Aren't there a ton of forehand-worthy approach discs out there already? There are a couple of reasons.

One, it's just a tad less overstable than most other FH approach discs! This makes it appealing to newer players, and those looking for a straighter and more workable disc!

Two, the Tempo is shallower than most discs like it. This gives it a comfortable feel in the hand. The low profile also makes it much easier to achieve a flutter-free sidearm!

Here's what Axiom has to say about the Tempo:

With flight numbers of 4 | 4 | 0 | 2.5, the Tempo was designed as a low-profile approach putter that, while not overwhelmingly overstable, can handle torque for forehand or backhand drives and approaches. Get into the flow that works for you with the 2024 OTB Open exclusive Proton Soft Tempo - the first official release of the disc that took us all by storm in 2023’s Circuit Challenge!

This video from TK Disc Golf is a great review of the Tempo!

In this Video TK compares it to the popular Discraft Zone.

Flight Numbers

Speed: 4

Glide: 4

Turn: 0

Fade: 2.5

As you can see the Tempo has just 0.5 less turn than the Zone.

Flight Path Chart

Here's an Axiom Tempo flight chart to give you a basic idea of how it's going to fly!

Common Uses

Forehand Approaches - This may just be the perfect forehand approach disc for beginners. If you're not ready for the overstability of a Zone, consider a Tempo. As a bonus, the shallower rim will help you to achieve a smooth release with no flutter!

If you're a more advanced disc golfer, and already love your overstable forehand approach disc, give the Tempo a yeet. Its straighter flight will be perfect for shots when there isn't room to fade or flex to the basket. Just pump the Axiom Tempo right down the middle!

Backhand Driving Putter - If you're looking for a stable and reliable driving putter that doesn't sacrifice distance, try the Tempo! Once again the shallower rim is a real perk. Many struggle to get a clean release and hit their lines with deeper putters.

Plastics

Neutron: Grippy and durable these Axiom Tempos are accurate to flight numbers. You can read our Neutron plastic review for more information.

Proton Soft: Highly durable, translucent, and with a good amount of flex. Proton Soft Tempos were released for the 2024 OTB Open. You can learn more about Proton Soft here.

Eclipse 2.0: The Tempo is about to be released in the much-loved glow plastic! In earlier times before 2.0, Eclipse could make a mold much more overstable. Since then MVP adjusted their blend and their glow discs are generally accurate to flight numbers. Even so these Eclipse Tempos could be a little more overstable! You can learn more about Eclipse 2.0 here.

Skill recommendations

Beginner: If you're a beginner looking for a forehand approach disc then the Tempo is a good place to start. It may be a little too overstable for you to get a full flight with, but it'll still be usable.

Intermediate: This is a great choice for somewhat experienced disc golfers to try! You may already have a forehand approach disc, but the Tempo is still worth throwing for its straighter and more workable flight!

Advanced: You probably already bag a forehand approach disc, but don't ignore the Tempo. With higher power levels you'll enjoy the stability of something like a Zone, but this disc is perfect when you need something that finishes a little straighter!

Reasons to Buy an Axiom Tempo

  • Slightly less overstable
  • A more beginner-friendly sidearm approach disc
  • Great for reliable backhand drives
  • Shallow rim
  • Helps you to throw flutter-free forehands
  • Comfortable in the hand
  • Because it's Axiom ;)

If you're a new player looking for something that flies straight the Tempo is not going to be that for you. You'll need to look for a more neutral or even understable putter. Rather try out the MVP Glitch.
