MVP Tesla vs. Discmania Vanguard Comparison

Est. Reading Time: 3 minutes

Two overstable fairway drivers have recently taken the disc golf market by storm. Disc Golf Deals USA gives you the exclusive MVP Tesla vs. Discmania Vanguard comparison below!

Both discs are 9 speeds with similar turn and fade. The MVP Tesla has the flight numbers of 9/5/-1/2 and the Discmania Vanguard is 9/5/0/2 making them extremely close in projected flight paths. For this disc comparison, we looked at how the discs flew on multiple flight paths and with max power to see how far they flew.

MVP Tesla

The MVP Tesla is one of the older MVP molds, being officially approved by the PDGA in 2014. It has a medium-sized rim for its speed with a rim depth that is comfortable in both the forehand and backhand grip.

Many pros bag the Tesla, most notably, Simon Lizotte. MVP recently released the Tesla in Proton plastic for Simon’s latest tour series disc in 2014.

Discmania Vanguard

The Discmania Vanguard is one of the newest molds from Discmania and is part of the Kyle Klein Creator Series discs. The Vanguard comes in a number of Discmania plastics, such as Color Glow, Golden Horizon, and Special Blend S-Line

The Vanguard has a similar feel to the Tesla, with an extremely comfortable rim size perfect for both forehands and backhands. The overstable fairway driver is relatively flat in all plastics and has a very overstable but workable flight path.

MVP Tesla vs. Discmania Vanguard

For our MVP Tesla vs. Discmania Vanguard comparison, we used the new Simon Lizotte MVP Tour Series Proton Tesla and the new Discmania Color Glow Vanguard. Both plastics are stiff and have solid grip in the hand in all weather conditions.

Hand Feel:  We found that while both discs offer similar rim sizes and depth, there are slight nuances when holding the discs. The MVP Tesla is slightly shallower, closer to the feel of a Discraft Undertaker in the hand. The Vanguard on the other hand is deeper and feels like “more disc” in the hand. If we had to compare the Vanguard to any disc it would be the Innova Thunderbird

Flatness: Both discs are fairly flat and don’t offer much in the way of dome goes. That makes these discs ideal for players who like to throw both backhand and forehand.

Tesla vs. Vanguard Flight Path Comparison

We found that these discs fly mostly true to their flight numbers in our testing but there are some areas they differ.

MVP Tesla Flight Path: The Tesla comes in with a -1 turn and a 2 fade, meaning that the overstable fairway driver should naturally offer some turn and reliably finish at the end of each flight. In our testing, we didn’t find this to be the case in many cases.

The Tesla is very overstable and doesn’t love to turn, especially in Proton plastic. When thrown flat, the Tesla will ride smoothly straight but makes quick work of a fast, hyzer finish. When thrown on a pure hyzer, the Tesla holds the line well and fights quickly to the ground with a sharp fade.

Our estimated flight numbers put the Tesla at 9/4/0/2.5

Discmania Vanguard Flight Path: Compared to the Tesla, the Vanguard gives players a smoother flight with more room for error on both the forehand and the backhand. The Vanguard will never turnover when thrown in a headwind or with a slightly off-angle throw and always fades smoothly to the ground.

Thrown flat and hard, the Vanguard rights straight and even flips with a bit of turn before returning to the line. One Hyzer, the Vanguard pushes forward and fades reliably.

Our estimated flight numbers put the Vanguard at 9/5/-0.5/2

Which Overstable Fairway Flies Further?

In a head-to-head comparison of the MVP Tesla vs. Discmania Vanguard, we found the Vanguard to have more distance potential. With the Vanguard’s ability to flip up easier and ride the turn more, the Vanguard is able to push its flight more. The Tesla on the other hand is more of a point-and-shoot fairway driver without the excessive overstability of an Innova Firebird or Axiom Fireball.
