Big Jerm to MVP... that was sudden and unexpected, but awesome at the same time!
Whenever a pro disc golfer changes up their sponsorship, they are faced with a challenge. They have to rebuild their bag from scratch, from an entirely new lineup of discs. If anyone is up to and eager for a challenge like this, it would be Big Jerm.
It's going to be fun to see a forehand-dominant player building a bag off of the Gyro lineup. While Eagle is well known for his sidearm, it's seen less action in recent years due to injury.
Jeremy is a player who opts for the forehand when he can, and as an added bonus he's a big fan of forehanding slower-speed discs. (Who wants an ace run challenge, Simon vs Jerm, Backhand vs Sidearm? It sounds legendary!)
Anyhow to get back to my point, we're all wondering which discs is our favorite Jomez commentator going to throw at MVP.
Which MVP Discs Will Big Jerm Throw?
To answer that question quickly here's a list of what we suspect will be making Big Jerm's early MVP bag. Some of these are guesses based on what Jeremy has thrown in the past, and others are based on videos released of Jerm playing with MVP Discs.
- Axiom Pyro
- Axiom Eclipse Hex
- Simon Line Pixel
- Axiom Wrath
- MVP Tesla
- MVP Octane
- MVP Delirium
- MVP James Conrad Trail
- Axiom Tempo
- MVP Atom
If you're interested in how Koling is adapting to MVP discs, check out the video further down of him, Simon, and James playing a casual first round of 2025! It's a ton of fun, and full of insights into his potential bag this year.
The Discs Jeremy Koling Used To Throw
Like a good detective, determining what a player is going to throw comes down to deduction. It can be surprisingly accurate to make guesses based on what the player threw in the past, as obviously, they're going to be trying to replicate it as closely as possible.
If you're out of the loop, here's a recent Jeremy Koling Innova in the bag video:
Here are some of his favorite discs, that he'll be hunting for replacements of.
- Aviar X3
- KC Pro Aviar
- R-Pro Dart
- Nate Sexton Firebirds
- Thunderbirds
- Wraiths
- Bosses
- Destroyers
The Discs We've Seen Him Using So Far
The biggest source of information we have on Jeremy's new discs so far is the video of him, Simon, and James playing. He's trying out quite a few molds.
Here's their round:
MVP Neutron Octane
The Octane is a neutral MVP distance driver with a speed rating of 13. It seems to be what Big Jerm is trying out as his backhand distance driver.
Axiom Neutron Delirium
According to Jeremy's own words, the Delirium handles the wind better than the Octane. It could be that this will be his more overstable distance driver, and could well be used for both backhands and sidearms.
Axiom Prism Proton Pyro
We all are already in love with the Pyro, and it seems that Jerm has joined the group. He's been in love with Prism Proton Pyro, primarily for his renowned slow-speed disc forehands, but also for backhands.
MVP Glow & Neutron Hex
Almost every Gyro fan bags a Hex, but Koling has put a new twist on that narrative. Rather than bagging it for backhands, he's perfected it for touchy midrange sidearms.
Axiom Simon Line Pixel
While he never putted with a beaded putter, Big Jerm has actually taken to one of Simon's most popular discs, the Pixel. He's been astounded by the amount of glide they have, and also how straight they fly.
MVP Neutron Trail
Jeremy seems to have a thing for MVP's fan favorites, and he continues the trend with his attraction to the James Conrad Trail. This disc has taken the disc golf world by storm, and could well be one of the best-selling molds of 2024! Interestingly he's using the Trail for both backhands and sidearms, creating an interesting difference from James's backhand-only use of the disc.
Axiom Eclipse Crave
Jeremy Koling says he really enjoying the Crave. His specific one looks to be a custom dye in Eclipse 2.0. He's loving it for a controllable late-flip forehand line, which he demonstrated perfectly.
Axiom Eclipse Tempo
This going to be one of the funniest discs to watch Big Jerm with. It's one of your typical sidearm approach discs but with a lower profile and slightly straighter flight. It sounds like something that could be a core disc in his bag.
MVP Atom
In the announcement video, he can be seen running through a pile of MVP Atoms. This could be a little easter egg that Jerm has taken a shine to this undermentioned mold! Seen as he already is using the Pixel as his putting putter, it seems more likely these would be for throwing.
MVP Proton Tesla
It's hard to say for sure but it looks like Jerm threw one of Simon's Hummingbird Teslas. It had the right flight, and you can hear Simon saying Hummingbird in the background. If it was a Tesla it would be no surprise! It would be a great disc for Koling to use for backhand and sidearm shots.
Likely Replacements For His Favorites
If anyone loved their discs it was Big Jerm. That's what makes this switch to MVP so interesting to watch. I just can't help wondering what he's going to try out to replace some of the discs he's been dialing for 5+ years.
To prove a point there were no less than 3 Jeremy Koling Innova signature line molds. The Thunderbird, the Boss, and then also his AviarX3s
Tempo for AviarX3
The AviarX3 has been a core part of Big Jerm's game for years now, and he's going to have to find some kind of replacement. While the Tempo might be a little more stable it could still serve the purpose, especially if he manages to beat one or two in a little.
Pixel for JK Pro Aviar
Anybody's putting putter is crucial to their game, and most players will think twice before changing it. Jeremy has no choice, but he seems to be enjoying the Pixel. The only is that it has a bead, which he's not used to.
Glitch, Pitch, or Parachute for Dart
The Dart is a unique approach disc that you're not going to mimic perfectly, but he should be able to produce a similar flight with something from the Gyro lineup. My thoughts instantly run to the popular line of 1-speed frisbee-like discs. Jeremy may well end up bagging one of three. Otherwise, it could be that the Atom he's seen checking out could replace the Dart.
Wrath for Nate Sexton Firebird
Nate Sexton Firebirds played an important role in Jerm's forehand game. NS versions of the Firebird tend to be a little more neutral, which he likes. This makes me think that the Wrath might be a more suitable replacement than something like the Axiom Fireball. Wraths generally fly with more stability than the numbers suggest as well.
Tesla for Thunderbird
The Thunderbird slot in Koling's back will be a hard one to fill! It was one of his signature discs at Innova for years. Overall, it's a great disc, but I do think that the Tesla is up for the challenge. It's a great 9-speed for backhands and sidearms. Maybe Simon will sell him on it, like he did with all of us!
Defy or Photon for Wraith
The Wraith is one of Innova's most popular discs for a good reason. The tricky thing may be for Jerm to find a disc that has the same level of turn, stability, and glide that the Wraith has in the MVP lineup. His closest bet by the numbers would be the Defy, but I think it would be noticeably more stable. It's more likely he'll work with a Photon, which he did try out in the practice round video.
Octane or Time-Lapse for Destroyer
Replacing the Destroyer from any lineup is probably one of the easiest to do. Just because almost every manufacturer has their own Destroyer clone. MVP Disc Sports recently added their own with the Simon Line Axiom Time-Lapse. It's hard to tell whether Jeremy will use it, or stick to Octane that he is currently enjoying.
Delirium for Bosses
Bosses are the boss if you're a powerful sidearm player. They're flattish, fast, and can handle torque. The Delirium shares similar qualities, and it seems as if it is the replacement Jerm is currently pursuing.
Key Takeaways
Jeremy Koling has only been with MVP for a few days, and the information we have to go on is slim. We're just extremely excited to see how this new partnership turns out.
Every player making a sponsorship change needs some time to test out their new available lineup and pick the discs that suit their game.
