What's your favorite color? Because it might not be your favorite anymore after you've spent half an hour searching for your disc.
While you might think the color of your disc golf discs is irrelevant, you're wrong.
The color of your discs has a great effect on "findability".
Some colors are much easier to find, and others make it feel like your discs are intentionally avoiding you.
If you're not one for hanging out in the thorny rough, calling your discs name for an hour to no effect, then consider reading this article, and buying discs in the best colors.
Why Does Color Matter for Disc Golf Discs?
The color of your discs is important for 3 reasons. Having discs in hard-to-find colors:
- Ruins your round
- Wastes your time
- Costs you money
When you lose a disc, besides losing your focus, you also have to play the rest of your round without that disc. If this is one of your favorite discs, it can really hurt you.
And the chances of losing your favorite discs are higher, because you throw them more often. In addition to that, it can often be hard to replace a disc, leaving you with an empty slot in your bag for more rounds than one.
What's the most valuable resource? Most would have to say time. And hunting for discs when you should be having fun hucking discs is a waste of time.
What's another valuable resource? Money. Buying new discs is exciting, but buying a disc to replace a new disc doesn't quite give the same thrill. Building your bag with the best disc golf colors actually saves you money.
The Best Colors
ย

ย
With all of that said, these are the best colors for a disc. Do note that while a color might be great in summer, it may not be ideal in winter. Don't worry, we'll cover this later on.
Pink
Pink is all around the best color for disc golf discs. It's bright and easy to find, in every season. Even if you're the manliest guy out there, you can't deny that some pink discs look pretty sick.
When buying discs, look for neon or hot pink options, as they are the easiest to find.
Orange
Why are roadwork signs orange? Because it's a very striking color. The same goes for orange discs, they're one of the easiest colors to find.
There is one small catch...
They're very hard to find in autumn, when leaves are on the ground.
This also just depends on the area you generally play in. If you're in open fields, or evergreen forests, this'll matter much less.
Yellow
Yellow is similar to orange, but just a tad harder to find. On the plus side, it's actually a little easier to find than orange in autumn. The downside, yellow is not one of the sharpest looking colors on a disc.
Blue
Blue is the perfect blend between aesthetics and findability. It stands out in most surroundings and seasons, and looks great at the same time. A lot of players I know have built their entire bags with blue discs.
While blue is great, it still doesn't stand out in the rough like a hot pink disc does.
Okay Colors
ย

ย
Here are some "okay" colors, that you'll be able to find most of the time.
Purple
Purple might seem like a good choice due to its similarity to pink. Unfortunately, being a slightly darker color makes a big difference. It doesn't stand out, and can be much harder to locate in shady areas.
If you play most of your rounds after work, in dusk conditions, purple discs become even harder to find.
White
While white discs offer a good contrast on almost all natural backgrounds, there is one that completely disguises them. Snow.
White discs are a great choice, except in snowy conditions. If you bag one, consider picking up a colorful alternative if you ever play in snow.
Neon Green
Green might seem like one of the worst colors, but it does depend on the type of green. A neon green disc is easy to find in winter and autumn, and it's not awful in summer and spring.
Red
Red has the same problem as purple in that it isn't a bright enough color. It obviously depends on the type of red, but most are tricky to find. Once again, the leaves during autumn will also make red less striking.
Colors to avoid
ย

ย
We all have those discs in our bag that we know, I'm going to lose this someday. Here are some of the colors that will make you leave your home and set up camp in the rough.
Clear
Clear discs are essentially invisible. Which is really cool, but also extremely hard to find. If you're quickly scanning the ground for your clear disc, you're not going to see it, but rather what's under it. Clear discs are a bad choice in any season, because they literally become whatever their surroundings are.
Dark & Dull Greens
Dark greens are hard to find in just about every surrounding season. They blend in with the undergrowth beautifully, achieving one of the highest levels of camouflage possible for a disc.
Join the #ThrowGreen movement today and spend the rest of your round in the bushes.
Brown
Just like the previously mentioned greens, brown is a very natural color. It doesn't stand out against undergrowth, long grass, or solid.
Brown discs also love to hide in piles of dead leaves to spend the rest of their days in peace. I would too if people kept throwing me into the same trees every week
Multicolored & Dyed
A blend of colors on a disc can confuse your eyes. Small swirls and the like don't make much of a difference, but more than 1 distinct color makes it harder to find your discs.
Don't get me wrong, dyed discs look incredible, but they are harder to see.
Black & Grey
I'll say it again, darker discs are harder to find. Black doesn't stand out well against green undergrowth, and becomes almost impossible to find when the sun's going down.
I still throw black discs anyway. They look so good.
Best Colors for Disc Golf Discs by Season
With changes in season come changes in ideal disc colors. The green foliage of spring and summer make finding discs a challenge. Piles of leaves in autumn can be a menace, and the dull geys of winter come with fresh challenges.

Where To Find Colorful Disc Golf Discs
Don't buy on Amazon. You can't select the exact disc you get. As a result, you usually end up receiving an unwanted color.
If you're in store, you'll be able to pick, but physical stores often have limited stock, and the best colors are often taken already.
Many online disc golf stores like Disc Golf Deals USA use a DYSITDYG system
DYSITDYG means "disc you see is the disc you get".
Online stores generally have more stock, so they have a big advantage over Amazon in that you can choose your specific disc, and in some cases, an advantage over local stores with limited stock.
